PREMIER LEAGUE 2022/23 SIGNINGS PART 2: LIVERPOOL – WOLVERHAMPTON

PREMIER LEAGUE 2022/23 SIGNINGS PART 2: LIVERPOOL – WOLVERHAMPTON

LIVERPOOL

After bringing in the biggest January signing with Luiz Dias yet still falling short of the Premier League title, Liverpool will be hoping their new signings will help them reclaim the title.

Most Important Signing: Darwin Nunez (£64m)
With the departure of Origi and Roberto Firmino lacking goals, it was imperative Liverpool signed someone who could help reclaim the PL title. Enter 22-year-old Uruguayan striker Nunez, who signed a six-year contract. Nunez scored 34 times for Benfica last season including goals against Liverpool in the Champions League Quarter Final and scored the third goal against Manchester City on his debut to win them the Community Shield.

Calvin Ramsay (£6.5m)
The right-back made 33 appearances last season for Aberdeen’s first team despite his young age and scored one goal and got nice assists across all competitions; following a great season he picked up SFWA Young player of the Year Award. Will Ramsay be a threat to Alexander-Arnold this season?

MANCHESTER CITY

Kalvin Phillips (£42m)
Since youth level, his alliance has been with Leeds, but after an impressive Euro 2020 performance, he swiftly attracted a lot of attention, making a transfer to a bigger club inevitable and when a team like Manchester City comes calling it’s hard to turn down. The 26-year-old appeared in 20 league matches last season and missed several games after picking up an injury, with his absence notably impacting Leeds, thus highlighting his influence. Phillips will be sharing the more defensive midfield position with Rodri.

Most Expensive Signing: Erling Haarland (£85.5m including add ons)
After a lot of talk of where he will end up, Manchester City was able to get the all-important signature from the Norwegian striker, bringing him over from Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund. After failing to secure Tottenham’s Harry Kane in previous attempts, City began searching elsewhere to fix their striker problems. Haarland is a proven finisher with 22 goals in 24 games last season. I, like many other football fans, am very excited to see what he can do this season, simultaneously dreading coming up against him.

MANCHESTER UNITED

Most Important Signing: Christian Erikson (free)
With the departures of Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard, this move came at the perfect time. From a traumatic Euro 2020 experience, having to leave Inter Milan on medical grounds, to having a great few months with Brentford, it’s been an emotional rollercoaster for Erikson. He is now able to return to elite level with one of the best teams in the country for next three years. The Danish midfielder will be reunited with Ten Hag, after he invited Christian to train with Ajax during his rehabilitation so the two are already familiar. In the 10 games Erikson started for Brentford they won seven, after only winning six of their previous 28 this proves he still has a huge impact on the field.

Most Expensive Signing: Lisandro Martinez (£48.3m)
The 24-year-old central defender will be linking up with his old Ajax manager again Ten Hag. Argentine international Martinez played in 24 of Ajax’s league matches last season helping them keep 11 clean sheets in a title-winning season.

NEWCASTLE UNITED

Most Expensive Signing: Sven Botman (£35m)
After an unsuccessful attempt in January, come summer Eddie Howe was determined to secure the defender. The 22-year-old appeared on 25 Ligue 1 matches last season keeping eight clean sheets and picking up three goals. He has also appeared in several champions league matches so will bring a lot of experience with him.

Matt Targett (£15m)
Following a successful loan spell helping Newcastle finish 11th in a season that left them fighting earlier relegation, the magpies triggered the buy option for the left-back from Aston Villa. The 26-year-old originally joined Newcastle in the January transfer window on loan and made 16 appearances helping the club keep an uncharacteristic five clean sheets and soar up the table. With the new owners and Newcastle having big ambitions I feel this will be a great move.

NOTTINGHAM FOREST

Most Important Signing: Jesse Lingard (free)
A shock decision for Lingard to opt for Forest over West Ham – where he had such a great loan spell – the Manchester United academy graduate spent the second half of the 20/21 season with the hammers scoring nine in 16 appearances, but he still hadn’t done enough to make the Man United starting line-up, so opted for a return to his boyhood club, unfortunately spending most of the time on the bench. Hopefully, this permanent move could give him another chance to relight his career.

Most Important Signing: Taiwo Awoniyi (£17.5m)
From Union Berlin, the 24-year-old scored 20 goals in 43 games in all competitions including 15 in the Bundesliga, helping them secure the fifth position and qualify for the Europa League for the first time since 2001/02.

SOUTHAMPTON

Most Expensive Signing: Gavin Bazunu (£15m)
The 20-year-old has not made any appearances for Manchester City at first team level, instead, he has been on multiple loan spells to lower league teams before finally making this permanent move down south. Bazunu made his senior international debut for the Republic of Ireland receiving 10 caps in just over a year. With the departure of Fraser Forster, this could mean the young Irishman will be the backup keeper for the saints.

Spurs have made multiple big name signings from both Championship and Premier League teams this summer.

Most Expensive Signing: Richarlison (£60m)
The Brazilian was extremely important last season for Everton ranking first in all of their stats, including most goals, picking up 10. Tottenham will be hoping he has the same if not more of an impact on their squad.

Most Important Signing: Djed Spence (£12.5m)
The young Englishman had been on loan to Nottingham Forrest, with an impressive season and an a PL promotion. The 21-year-old made 46 appearances but obviously wanted to push for trophies and with many teams after him. Spence has also made three appearances for England under 21’s and looks like a nailed-on player for next summer’s Under 21 European Championship, if his form continues.

WEST HAM

Most Expensive Signing: Nayef Aguerd (£30m)
The 26-year-old Moroccan defender featured in 31 Ligue 1 games last season in which 10 clean sheets were kept, he also played in four Champions League matches.

Alphonse Areola (£10.5m)
After being unsuccessful with Jesse Lingard, the hammers successfully hit the buy option in Areola’s previous loan deal making him a permanent iron from Paris Saint-Germain. The 29-year-old only featured in one PL game during his loan spell but was the main option for between the sticks in their Europa League run. The Frenchman was wanted by multiple clubs but feeling comfortable at his previous loan spell club this is a great move.

WOLVERHAMPTON

Most Important Signing: Hwang Hee-Chan (£10m)
From a loan spell last season to a permanent summer transfer from RB Leipzig. Bruno Lage was evidently impressed with the South Korean’s performances as he featured in 30 games scoring five goals and also plays for South Korea’s first team, making 47 appearances and scoring eight goals so far.

Most Expensive Signing: Nathan Collins (£20.5m)
The 21-year-old Irish centre-back played in 22 games last season in all competitions for Burnley even picking up two goals but still couldn’t help them escape relegation keeping only five clean sheets while on the pitch.
