Qatar 2022: England secure quarter-final spot after dominating Senegal

A masterclass from England saw them secure 3-0 victory against Senegal with goals from Jordan Henderson, Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka, and land a quarter-final place against reigning champions France.

England didn’t have the brightest of starts with a physical opening and Champions of Africa winner Senegal setting the pace of the game.

The Three Lions failed to play the ball out from the back and came close to conceding early with Ismaïla Sarr’s close range shot blazing over the bar.

Another warning sign for England saw a Senegal chance followed shortly with an outreached Jordan Pickford arm preventing it hitting the back of the net.

England’s star man was Jude Bellingham, had an exceptional game and was rewarded with an early assist for Henderson passing it back into the centre of the box for the Liverpool captain to finish off.

Just four minutes later Bellingham was involved yet again, winning the ball back in his defensive half before driving over the halfway line showing fantastic balance and determination before releasing Phil Foden, a quick pass across to Kane who finally buried his first goal of the tournament, taking his team into the break two goals ahead.

The three lions third and final goal came in the second half with a young lion’s line-up.

Great footwork from Foden before driving towards the Saka in the box, who received the ball via a nutmegged pass and having got in front of his man made it possible to launch the ball over the keeper for his second tournament goal, sending a wave of relaxation and comfort to all England fans at home and abroad.

Marcus Rashford was brought on for the final portion of the game and looked-on for another goal but couldn’t direct the ball inside the post.

Although some parts of the game were very uneventful, the job in hand was completed and England progress with their unbeaten streak intact along with another clean sheet but next up is France and the lions must prepare for their toughest opponents if they are to keep the World Cup dream alive.
